The Birds of Prey trailer previews a fun female-led adventure set within the world of the DCEU. Although there is perhaps more Harley Quinn than the actual Birds of Prey team, it’s unclear whether that’s indicative of the actual film or simply the trailer. It certainly makes sense for Warner Bros. to use Harley Quinn and, by extension Robbie, to market the movie since the character is well known both from various animated DC projects and comics, but Robbie’s own version in Suicide Squad. However, it also appears the movie will largely focus on her as well. And there are sure to be fans who would prefer a movie that focused entirely on the Birds of Prey.
Robbie’s Harley Quinn will also appear in James Gunn’s soft reboot of Suicide Squad, titled The Suicide Squad. Robbie joins several other cast members from the 2016 film that will be reprising their roles, including Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig. The film is scheduled for release on Feb. 7, 2020.
